Helping to Educate and Rebuild Cambodian communities

During 2004, CVCD was assisted by an Australian Youth Ambassador, Ms Kate McMahon to help strengthen and improve CVCD’s Environmental Education Unit. Throughout the year a series of workshops were conducted with students enrolled in the Sewing Out Poverty program. Students from this program were also involved in designing and making 100 cloth shopping bags that will be disbursed to community members during an education campaign on waste reduction. It is hoped that the use of this cloth bag campaign will encourage community members to take initiative in reducing the current waste polluted conditions they live in.

Positive Paper Project

The Positive Paper project was initiated in 2004 due to the absence of a paper recycling scheme in many schools, businesses, industries and NGO’s. After paper has been recycled and collected from various groups it is taken to a community in Boeung Kak, Phnom Penh. In this community, a group of 10 people living with HIV/AIDS and their families are involved in recycling this paper by hand into various handicrafts (wrapping paper, writing sets, photo albums) that can be sold both locally and overseas. All profits from the sales are used to pay each family an income and provide them with medical and educational services. Prior to this project these community members previously earnt money from begging or sorting rubbish in the streets or tip. This project has improved their self worth and dignity whilst giving them an alternative healthier option to earning an income. This project has been established in conjunction with another local NGO the Salvation Centre of Cambodia .

Tree Planting

This project first began in 1995 when community members, CVCD staff and students planted over 5,500 trees in the province of Takeo, Now almost ten years later these trees have grown providing shelter, fruit and raised awareness in the community about protecting and preserving the environment.

In January 2003, through the generous donation of the Canada Fund, German Embassy and Individuals a further 1000 trees were planted, 65 cement benches were built, 75 rubbish bins and steps constructed to assist conserve the beauty of the national park in Takeo. In August 2004, CVCD and Sovann Komar supported the planting of 1000 trees in the Phnom Dar community, Takeo province.

Royal University of Fine Arts Revitalisation Project

This project aims to improve the aesthetic environment of the Royal University of Fine Arts North Campus, to ensure that the students can study in a place that reflects the high standards of discipline and beauty inherent in the study of traditional Cambodian dance and music. The project will involve a Campus Clean Up, environmental education workshop, improvements to sanitation, landscaping and some restoration of the buildings. This project was instigated and funded by Ms Anne H Bass, an American who has a great interest in Cambodian performing arts.

Future Direction

The environmental education workshops will continue to be taught in the Sewing Out Poverty program. An Environmental education curriculum will be introduced across all of CVCDs projects via a training manual that will be developed during 2004. The RUFA Revitalisation project will be implemented during 2005. The Positive Paper project will aim to become self sustainable by mid 2005.
